I've heard of Jennifer's Body through it's soundtrack and it's generally bad reviews, but I've never seen the movie itself and I don't like judging movies I've not seen for myself. Your description of it makes it sound like an interesting satire on tropes in horror and teen movies today, and this reminded me of a movie that I've come to love in the past few years: Heathers. It seems that both movies make commentary on teen movies in their respective time periods through comedy.
Both Jennifer's Body and Heathers use both violence and comedy to subvert their respective genres, and I think it is interesting that both movies with similar intentions use the same means to get their points across even decades apart. In Heather's, however, the violence starts when JD purposefully makes Veronica unwillingly give Heather 1(Chandler ?? Idk their last names) a deadly drink, whereas in Jennifer's Body, violence seems to always be a part of the lead's life from the get go.
Flawed leads who refuse to see what they are doing is wrong also seems to be a theme in these two films. Just as Jennifer is self-centered and refuses to accept that she is flawed, many of the characters are extremely flawed, but the flawed king has to be JD, who is so blinded his revenge against the "system" that he kills and puts everyone around him in danger. It is interesting that both of these characters use violence and refuse to accept reality as it is.
Movies that include a lot of parody typically have bad reviews. Jennifer's Body however seemed to be a lot more clever as shown in Lola's analysis of the movie.
ReplyDeleteThat is so true that Heathers is in a way a precursor. JB seems to be channeling many different horror and horror parodies but it also is an homage to Heathers.
