Vine

Vines are one of my absolute favorite things on the planet earth. These short videos have made me laugh so many times and it's hard to get tired of them. Vines are great in that way because they are so short, you can watch them over and over and over again and the vine is still hilarious. There are so many great vines, from the classic "fre shava cado" to Judus bring Jesus myrrh, myrrh-dur. All theories of comedy can be found in these tiny videos that took over the internet.
Incongruity theory can be found in a lot of vines with twist endings. For example, a vine starts with a teacher asking a kid names Jared to read a question, and he responds "No", which you would expect to be because he doesn't want to, but then in a voice-over, he says "Hi I'm Jared, I'm 19, and I never learned how to f****** read". This subverts the audience's expectations, thus creating a comedic effect. (In writing this, I realized I'm going to be ruining all of these vines I was going to talk about by explaining them🙃)
Superiority theory was also all over vine, with plenty of people falling and making general fools of themselves. An example of superiority humor on vine is the vine that went around with a young girl singing, quite out of tune, "country boy I love youuuu" and then sticking out her tongue. This is an example because the main way the comedy works is by poking fun at this poor little girl.
Relief theory was less prevalent, but there are a few vines I can think of that use relief theory, maily a few by Thomas Saunders where it would start off scary, such as the vine where he starts saying "your days are numbered", but then subverting it into a compliments, so the vine before ends with "with this friendship calendar to mark your future successes".

  1. It does seem that a lot of the Vine humor is just mean or involves laughing at people. Do you think that superiority captures what it means to laugh at people? How did Vine uniquely achieve this?

  2. I love the Jared not being able to read Vine, he also had a really funny one about putting his brother to sleep because his brother pushed him.
